So How Do You Buy?

Legitimate auctions are a good way to buy - but don't expect a bargain. You're getting authentic pieces at authentic prices; but it's very, very seldom that you'll get a break.

So- A dealer, of course. We're dealers, so what's new.....

But- Be careful of both the art and the dealer.

Any dealer you buy from should unconditionally guarantee his pieces. He should know more about them than anyone else; and you should know about him, and his reputation. He should be able to tell you about the condition; any restorations, replacements or repairs that have been made; and give you an idea of the quality level and rarity of the pieces you're considering.

He can't tell you the piece is right for you; that's your decision - but can tell you how it ranks in terms of others of its kind.

If he's selling any pieces on E-Bay, he shouldn't be hiding the bidders names in the auction, with some claim he's doing it to benefit you in some way. I'm always suspicious that I'm bidding against some friend or relative. And I want to read his feedback - are any negatives because of some reason that's understandable, or has he lied about descriptions, non-delivery, or sending pieces other than the ones purchased.

Do your homework, and good luck with your collecting.
